Since I promised to not let another two months go by without another update, I figured I better follow through on that promise.
It appears those who signed up for the 50-mile Thanksgiving to Christmas challenge have been busy little beavers! As of today, a majority have already completed their 50 miles with another 5 days to go! Lindsey had a great idea to have people take a selfie when they complete their 50th mile and the pictures have been coming in all week.
I was starting to feel like a bit of a slacker, so I had to get my butt in gear and knock out my last 7 miles last night and this morning just so I could join the 50-mile club. Mission accomplished!
And, since I didn't want to be on a treadmill for those last few, I decided to hit the trails so I could get an outdoor selfie. Not only that, but I wanted that 50th mile to be sort of epic, so I headed out to the dreaded Power Lines just off the Beck's Road between Cloquet and Duluth.
If you've never done a winter trail run I would highly, highly suggest it! Just like anybody else, I was worried about freezing my hands and feet, but I found that my regular old Hokas, a pair of long socks and some light running gloves was all I needed. Yeah, my feet got a little damp, but they never once felt cold at all. As long as I kept moving, I was fine!
Now I think I'm starting to understand why Jeff does winter ultras, because it was downright beautiful out there! As far as a selfie goes, I had so much freakin' fun that I had to take several pictures, so I decided to just throw them all in a mini slide show at the bottom of this post. Not only did I have fun, but I brought Scout with too and she probably enjoyed it more than I did!
Anyways, for those who haven't finished the challenge and think that they may not, or those who are afraid of losing their motivation after this one is over, I've cooked up a new idea. The next challenge will go from New Year's Day to Valentine's Day (just over 6 weeks) and people can sign up for different levels - 25 miles, 50 miles, 75 miles, or 100+ miles. That way, anyone - regardless of free time, fitness level or motivation - can sign up for whatever they feel comfortable with and then proceed to blow that goal out of the water! 'Cuz remember, any miles are better than zero miles!
So that's it for now. Keep on moving and watch for a New Year's Day email asking you to sign up for the next phase! Tell your friends and send me their emails - the more the merrier! And if you make a decision early, feel free to send me an email regarding which level you choose (I'm going for 75) and I'll get the lists started early.
Merry Christmas to all and happy running!
